Merdeka 118 Tower Crowned ‘World’s Best Skyscraper’

The Merdeka 118 Tower, a towering symbol of pride in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, has achieved unique global recognition. The Council on Vertical Urbanism (CVU), one of the world’s leading urban architecture organizations, has awarded the building the title of “World’s Best Skyscraper.”

This recognition not only elevates Malaysia’s standing in Southeast Asia but also marks its renewed presence on the global architectural map.

The prestigious award was presented at the CVU 2025 Awards Ceremony held in Toronto, Canada, which recognizes outstanding achievements in architecture and urban design worldwide.

Architectural Marvel and National Symbol

• Height: At 678.9 meters, Merdeka 118 is currently the second-tallest tower in the world and the tallest building in Southeast Asia.

• Symbolism: It is not merely a structure but a symbol of Malaysia’s progress, heritage, and national pride.

PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd (PNBMV), the project’s developer, stated that CVU Chairman Shawn Mills commented: “Merdeka 118 is a prime example of integrated design, where technology, culture, and environmental responsibility have worked together. It proves how a skyscraper can reflect a nation’s identity and aspirations.”

The tower is the centerpiece of the Merdeka 118 Precinct, which includes the iconic Stadium Merdeka, the upcoming 118 Mall, and various community initiatives. These elements are part of the Warisan Kuala Lumpur Project, which bridges heritage and modernity in urban development.

Reflecting the Spirit of Independence

This recognition of Merdeka 118 as the world’s second-tallest and best-designed building elevates Malaysia’s architectural prowess, engineering achievement, and leadership in sustainable urban development to new heights.

Merdeka 118 is considered a symbol of a free nation’s dream, heritage, and potential. Its design, engineering innovation, and eco-friendly approach are the primary reasons for this recognition.

• Datuk Tengku Ab. Aziz Tengku Mahmud (CEO of PNBMV) said this recognition is a great honor for Malaysia. “Our goal was not just to build a tall tower, but to create a place that embodies heritage, connects people, and inspires sustainable development.” He added that Merdeka 118 symbolizes the spirit of independence, reflecting the nation’s strength, unity, and optimism for the future.

• Karl Fender (Principal Architect of the Australian firm Fender Katsalidis) said that the construction of Merdeka 118 was not merely a competition of height; it was an endeavor to honor Malaysia’s past while building a symbol of its future.
